Morning Shoot in the Redwoods

No, I didn't make a quick trip to California although that would have been awesome. it was a cold and breezy morning and I was not expecting much due to these conditions. On the way to Dawes Arboretum, we saw a band of clouds above the horizon that were catching the light from the rising sun and throwing a nice magenta light over the country side. I could not get there in time to take advantage of that but the light still turned out to be fantastic. It was a defused soft light due to overcast that formed over the rising sun. The sky to the west was dark under cloud cover making a nice contrast.

These particular redwood trees are known as Metasequoia (Dawn Redwood) and are located at the Dawes Arboretum. These trees are the result of a seed collecting trip to China in 1993. Metasequoia was first described as a fossil from the Mesozoic Era by Shigeru Miki in 1941. However, in 1944, a small stand of an unidentified tree species was discovered in China but after the war, the trees were finally described as the living species of Metasequoia in 1948. The Metasequoia is a fast-growing tree that is expected to reach 130–150 feet (40–45 m) tall and 6 feet (2 m) in trunk diameter.

The image below is the trail on the way to the redwoods. In spite of the wind, I think it was an outing worth while.
